Join us to build something big

building a great and lastin company starts, of course, with the people. Here are some of the talented people who work at Bluefin. Meet the team.
  • Mike Koehrsen

    Mike Koehrsen

    Architect

Mike's introduction to "big data" came while working in genomics at the Broad Institute. His team there was responsible for managing and analyzing genome data from thousands of strains of viruses, bacteria and fungi, as well as the occasional mammal. Mike enjoys applying ideas from the genomics world to designing and building Bluefin's social media analysis platform.

When he's not at work: You might find Mike taking in a movie with his son, or rehearsing with his brass quintet.

  • Jeff Boulter

    Jeff Boulter

    Architect (the technical kind)

Jeff has been building highly-scalable, data-driven websites almost since the web was born. He sold his personalized news site, CRAYON, to another MIT Media Lab startup, Firefly Network, in 1996. He followed Firefly's acquisition into Microsoft, then went back into startup-land with LAUNCH Media in 1999. There he conceived and built LAUNCHcast, a pioneering customized online radio service. LAUNCH was acquired by Yahoo! in 2001 and Jeff went on to lead the engineering team for Yahoo! News.

In his spare time: Jeff frets about the Red Sox and chases around his two small kids.

  • Ying Dong

    Ying Dong

    Data Engineer

Who needs toys when you have data? Ying plays with data all day long. She engineers a core piece of the Bluefin data engine that powers insights and analytics for marketers. Ying comes to Bluefin from Apple and prior to that, Jumptap.

When not playing with data: Ying is likely traveling the world or running marathons.

  • Matt Miller

    Matt Miller

    Machine Learning Engineer

Matt joins Bluefin from Deb Roy's group at the MIT Media Lab. While at MIT, Matt focused on machine learning and data mining, with special interest in graph segmentation and spectral theory. Matt's expertise is using unsupervised methods to discover structure in high dimensional spaces, and using that information to improve classification results.

Not-so-secret past life: Started off studying philosophy. Was two years into a philosophy PhD program before being drawn in to the world of computer science.

  • Mark Watabe

    Mark Watabe

    Software Engineer

Mark studied architecture for nearly a decade at Rice and then MIT while attempting to cover up his developer alter ego. While he certainly misses making models the old fashion way, he has decided to pursue a software developer and UI design career until collaborative architecture software catches up to current practices in software development. Git Building Merge.

Office chair or stability ball? Ball, for sure.

  • Drew Rothstein

    Drew Rothstein

    Ops Engineer

Drew knows all. Drew works on all things related to Bluefin technical ops. (He can even monitor network health on plasma screens behind his head, or so it seems.) Past life: he performed research at Akamai in both Germany and Cambridge.

While away from his computer: Drew enjoys motorcycling and microelectronics.

  • Robert Wagner, Ph.D.

    Robert Wagner, Ph.D.

    Computer Vision Engineer

Robert brings a deep background in computer vision research to Bluefin. Robert's past projects include: algorithms for enhancing the resolution of night vision goggles, video enhancement algorithms for the DTO VACE II program, and vision research for the control and navigation of mobile robots using a model of the wide-field human visual representation!

You might also know him from: MathWorks, Charles River Analytics, Salient Stills, Naval Research Laboratory (Navy Center for Applied Research in Artificial Intelligence).

  • Evan Shore

    Evan Shore

    Product Manager

Evan brings both corporate and startup perspectives to the business team. Evan previously worked at McKinsey & Company as a Strategy Consultant and at The Carlyle Group as a Private Equity Investor. He also started a company and was honored as an Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year. He received his MBA from Harvard Business School and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with degrees in Finance and Anthropology.

You might find him: On the squash court or composing piano music.

  • Michael Guigli

    Michael Guigli

    Associate Marketing Manager

Need someone to construct a client analysis deck or write copy for marketing collateral? Mike’s our guy. At Bluefin, Mike shares time with the product and customer insights teams although his primary role is in marketing. He received his BA in Economics from Tufts University. He also holds an MBA with a concentration in Strategy and Business Analysis and an MS in Information Systems from Boston University.

Outside the brick walls: Loves playing soccer and learning to play music on his guitar and keyboard.

  • Shauni Deshmukh

    Shauni Deshmukh

    Software Engineer

With a BS in Computer Science and a minor in Linguistics from MIT, Shauni was destined for Bluefin. At Bluefin, Shauni processes all the TV content ingested and all the data mined in social media before it reaches the front-end teams. Before joining Bluefin, she was a Software Systems Engineer at MITRE working on various projects such as improving national infrastructures for healthcare IT.

From the Alps to New England: Over the last few years, she’s regained an interest in skiing, an activity she first picked up while living in Switzerland during her early childhood.

  • Lauren Perini

    Lauren Perini

    Subject Matter Expert

At Bluefin, Lauren leads our audience segmentation analytics effort for brands. Before Bluefin, she worked at HubSpot on their sales team. As the third resident Jumbo, Lauren joins the team with a BA in Biology from Tufts University.

Acoustic or Electric? Although she learned to play guitar on electric, her go to on open mic nights is acoustic where she plays everything from bluegrass to Adele.
